When and Where is the Event?
Please join the New Orleans Loving Festival for a Gallery Opening and Reception for Angela Fama: What is Love
WHAT IS LOVE is a multi-layered social practise project aimed at unifying past perceived differences through creatively and collaboratively redefining the word “love.” The concept of love has been the driving force behind the creation of some of our greatest works of art, our philosophies, and our most severe behaviors. While Webster’s Dictionary defines love as “a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person,” this uniform definition precludes our understanding that the human experience of love is varied.
Interdisciplinary photographic artist, ANGELA FAMA began What Is Love in response to this standardized definition. Through the months of May to October 2015, Fama drove over 17,000 kilometers across Canada and the USA in "Debbie," a 1977 RV she remodeled to be a traveling photo studio. Fama stopped at over 20 pre-determined diverse locations, New Orleans being one of them, capturing over 300 interactions with interested passersby. Fama asked each person the same set of questions in the studio and documented the resulting conversation through image and audio.
GALLERY HOURS: Weekdays from 8:00am to 6:00pm. ON VIEW: June 2nd to July 7th, 2017. Curated by the Exhibition Design Class, M. A. Museum Studies Program, Southern University at New Orleans.
ARTIST BIO: Angela Fama is interested in exploring the tension inherent in our collective desire for both the temporal and transcendent. Investigating themes of meaning, emotion, memory and change, Fama is often found burrowing through the endless excess, finding substance and beauty in the overlooked or forgotten.
