My husband and I have been happily together for 8 years and married for 7 of those years. And I can remember the 1st time it was brought to our attention that we were an interracial couple like it was yesterday; and I think about it often now. It sounds funny, but up until then, we really hadn't thought too much about the fact the he is white and I'm black. It was during our marriage counciling with our pastor. And she brought up the question of had we thought about the problems we may have with being interracial and problems our children may have if we had any. I remember we both looked at each other with a look of...confusion. Confusion is not the right word, but I don't have the right word. On our way home from the session, we had our first discussion of how we never considered there would be a problem because to us there was no problem. The only problem we thought of having was being able to support ourselves at such a young age. Race is a problem? You can say we were naive, but we were very young. But the fact that our pastor brought it up and she notice our race difference, helped us to realize that people still concern themselves with silly things like that. It was definitely an eye opener.
