Proclamation
Loving Day
June 12, 2015
WHEREAS, Mildred and Richard Loving were unable to marry in the Commonwealth of
Virginia due to laws prohibiting interracial marriage, then arrested and forced out of their home, city and state as a result of wedding in Washington, D. C. where interracial marriage was legal at the time; and
WHEREAS, the Loving family did not back down but took their case to the Supreme
Court and won on June 12, 1967, creating a landmark civil rights victory and paving the way for all consenting adults to marry the one that they love; and
WHEREAS, we are now moving forward in the twenty first century as a multiracial and
multicultural society, we must find a common vision from our interwoven past to build a society free of racism for the benefit of our collective future; and
WHEREAS, the City of Seaside is California, has a history of Civil Rights action,
standing with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Rosa Parks; and
WHEREAS, the City of Seaside was the peninsula’s welcoming arms for interracial
marriages.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, that I The Honorable Ralph Rubio, Mayor of the City of Seaside, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby recognizes June 12th as Loving Day, and that this day will be a celebration of multiculturalism and hope for our future.
