PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, Loving Day is celebrated annually on June 12th to commemorate the 1967 Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia that struck down laws prohibiting interracial marriage in the United States; and
WHEREAS, this landmark civil rights ruling helped legally validate the fundamental principles of human equality and marriage equality for all Americans, regardless of race; and
WHEREAS, Loving Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the legacy of Mildred and Richard Loving, who courageously fought to overturn Virginia’s antimiscegenation laws and paved the way for interracial couples nationwide; and
WHEREAS, Loving Day promotes education, understanding, and acceptance of all loving committed relationships and families, regardless of racial or ethnic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, the Town of East Hartford embraces diversity, inclusion, and equal rights as core values that strengthen the fabric of our community; and
NOW THEREFORE, I Connor S. Martin, Mayor of the great Town of East Hartford do proclaim June 12, 2024 as;
“Loving Day”
In the Town of East Hartford and encourage all residents to join in celebrating this milestone anniversary with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
